How to choose between plants before you buy

We have all done it. You are standing in the nursery with a plant in each hand, both look lovely, and you have no real idea which one will actually work at home. So you pick the prettier one, or the cheaper one, or the one whose label you half understood, and you hope. A few weeks later you find out the hard way that it wanted twice the water you can give it, or grows three times bigger than the spot allows.

Choosing between plants gets a lot easier when you know what to actually compare. It is rarely about which is prettier. It is about which one fits your conditions, and there are only a handful of things that really decide that.

Sun, the first dealbreaker

Before anything else, compare how much sun each plant wants against how much your spot actually gets. A full sun plant in a shady corner grows leggy and never flowers, while a shade lover in the blazing afternoon sun scorches. This one factor rules out more plants for a given spot than any other, so it is where any comparison should start.

Water, the second

Then water. How thirsty is each plant, and how much are you honestly going to water it? A drought tolerant plant and a moisture lover can look almost identical in the pot at the nursery and want completely different care at home. If water is tight, or you travel, the low water option is not a compromise, it is the plant that will still be alive in a month.

Mature size, the one people forget

That neat little plant in the small pot is a baby. What matters is how big it gets, because a plant that outgrows its spot means constant pruning, or a plant crowding everything around it, or one that simply looks wrong. Always compare the mature height and spread, not the size in your hand today. It is the difference most often missed and most often regretted.

The details that decide it

After sun, water and size, a few more things often break the tie. Frost tolerance matters if you are on the Highveld, since a tender plant that sails through a Cape winter can die in a Johannesburg one. Growth rate tells you how fast you will get the look you want. Maintenance, whether it needs regular pruning, feeding or deadheading, tells you how much work you are signing up for.
